For weeks, people have been up in arms about an event hosted by Uncensored America at USC on Wednesday, “The Roast of Cumala Harris.” Understandably so. In 2024, we have seen the topic of free speech on public university campuses nationwide under attack and in the headlines. South Carolina is no different.

The conversation about the boundaries of free speech in public institutions has stretched beyond college campuses. It is the leading point in the debate around book censorship. Numerous lawsuits have been filed, pushing the limits on what is and is not covered under Americans' First Amendment rights.
