Since 2016, Democrats have been known for their 'going high' approach; in 2024, a strategic shift in their messaging is a breath of fresh air

At the 2016 Democratic National Convention, outgoing First Lady Michelle Obama addressed the crowd with her iconic “when they go low, we go high” phrase for the first time. Since then, this line has been repeated, seemingly to remind Democrats of our morals and values in contrast to those of the current-day Republican party. In 2016, this line was a much-needed kick that we needed. However, in the eight years since, some have lamented that this phrase is worn out. 

It’s no secret that the Democratic Party has a history of messaging problems. As a county party leader, I have heard it countless times. Especially as the Republican party has honed in on solid messaging that mobilizes its supporters to show up, messaging has been a growing Achilles heel for the Democrats. Michelle Obama’s quote leaves some groaning and asking for more.
