State Representative JA Moore released a statement yesterday afternoon saying that he was threatened at gunpoint by a resident in the Park Circle area in North Charleston.
Moore said that he was picking up his daughter that afternoon from her first day of school when he pulled into a parking spot. A white man driving a black truck then cut him off and took his intended parking spot.
As Moore rolled down his window to confront the man, the suspect then went into his vehicle, pulled out a handgun, and aimed it at Moore, according to an article by The Post and Courier.
Moore then fled the scene while the suspect went into Madra Rua’s Irish Pub where he was questioned by officers who responded to the incident. The suspect admitted that there was a verbal altercation but said he did not point a handgun at Moore.
There were no witnesses or security camera footage of the altercation. No arrests have been made at the time of this reporting but the investigation into the incident is still ongoing.
Gun violence has played a large role in Moore’s life after losing his sister in the 2015 Mother Emanuel AME Church shooting that killed nine church members.
Moore has consistently advocated for stronger gun control laws in South Carolina. He reaffirmed his commitment to this cause in a statement he released on Twitter.
“This incident serves as a stark reminder of the work that still needs to be done to protect our neighborhoods from gun violence. We must come together to ensure that every family feels safe in their homes and in their community. I remain dedicated to this cause, now more than ever,” he said.
In front of his daughter, no less. Trauma from guns passing to the next generation. Shameful.
