Batter Up, Pete
Yes, I am using a sports analogy. Buckle up. Little known fact about me: I was the only girl on my baseball team in Kindergarten and I played until I started getting scared of the ball Sophomore year in High School (don’t ask). I am also a State Champion Volleyball player and clearly look for any opportunity to mention that. You might be wondering why that fact wasn’t central to my campaign. Trust me, I am too. Take it up with my campaign team. A real missed opportunity, if you ask me.
Politics used to be a game of fastpitch softball. The GOP was a formidable opponent. Every game could go one way or another. We had to train. Send out our best every single game, every single inning. We had to agonize over our lineup. It was hard. It required focus, discipline and teamwork. Democrats played well at this game. We won plenty. We lost some. But we were almost always prepared and we took the game seriously. We knew the rules. We understood the rules. Our heads were in the game.
When Trump became the face of the GOP, politics turned into a game of slowpitch. That was all they could handle so they changed the rules. It became much easier to make contact with the ball. We didn’t have to train quite as much. We capitalized on the easier game and our weaker opponent. We won big in 2018. We won the White House in 2020. We have been winning ballot measures across the country. We adapted and we kept our heads in the game.
On Thursday night, at the RNC, the GOP changed the game again. Trump’s unhinged 92-minute rambling, incoherent, extremist speech (and Hulk Hogan and Kid Rock) made it clear that we are now playing T-ball. We’re playing T-ball because that’s all the 2024 GOP clown show can handle. It just got so much easier to win, especially considering we still have a team of fastpitch all-stars.
Great news! Time to celebrate at Pizza Hut with the whole team! I wish.
